The area that Gideon now sits on was once a large, thick cypress swamp. The area around Gideon had many settlers before 1900. The first of these settlers were Native American Indians. Next, French and Spanish Explorers moved across the land. Some of the events that occurred in the Gideon area before 1900 are the New Madrid Earthquake, the first road through the swamp and the first house in Gideon.
